Where to start
If you have not fixed your dates yet, read the season guide first - Wai in the monsoon and Wai in December are genuinely different trips, and the Kaas Plateau window is only a few weeks long. If your dates are set and you are deciding between towns, the Wai or Panchgani comparison is the one to read.
If you are already coming and just want a plan, the one-day itinerary runs the ghats, the temples, Menavali and Dhom Dam in an order that works with the light and the heat rather than against them.
Two things worth knowing about Wai
The good hours are early and late. Almost everything worth seeing here - the ghats in use at dawn, the mist on the Krishna, the sunset over Dhom Dam - happens outside the middle of the day. A day trip from Pune misses both ends of that, which is the main argument for staying a night.
The last stretch of road is unlit. Whatever you are driving and wherever you are staying, arriving in daylight is easier than arriving after dark. Leaving Pune before four on a Friday is worth more than any shortcut.
Why we write these
Wai is the town almost everyone drives through on the way up to Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar. There is very little written about it that is not a copy of the same paragraph, and most of what exists gets the practical details wrong - the hours, the seasons, whether the boating is running.
We run a farm villa three kilometres from town, so we answer these questions in person every week. These pages are those answers, written down. If something here is out of date, tell us and we will fix it.
